HECTOR THE UNDEAD PRINCE OF TROY

By Melanie Saward

In the world above, the Trojan royal family sit in their places on the wall and watch in horror as Achilles drags Hector’s body across the gravelly sand to his chariot by one arm. He pulls so hard that even up on the wall, Hector’s family can hear the sound of the shoulder popping from its joint. Andromache turns her baby son around on her lap, trying to shield him from the sight.

The women sob quietly, and even Helen — who has, in the ten years the war has been raging, barely shown any remorse — has tears in her eyes. On the ground, Achilles strips the body of its armour, takes his sword and slashes holes through Hector’s legs and ties them to the chariot. Realising what he is about to do, Helen reaches across to comfort Andromache. The princess pulls away.

‘This is your fault,’ Andromache hisses and Helen withdraws her hand while Achilles mounts the chariot and whips the horses into motion, leaving the body to trail along the ground.

At first, the chariot goes slowly, the horses adjusting to the added weight, and Hector’s body, dragging and lagging, catches on rocks and patches of uneven ground. Achilles yells as he rides, pumping his fist in the air and glancing back with a grin on his face when he sees that after just the trip along the wall and back down along the line of cheering Greek soldiers, Hector’s body is no longer recognisable as the handsome prince of Troy.

But he isn’t near sated yet, and he whips the horses harder, pushing them to go faster and faster, turning lap after lap along the wall, leaving a trail of dark red blood and pieces of Hector’s flesh in the sand. Even as fighting ceases for the day and the two armies walk the battle ground gathering their dead, building funeral pyres and starting the rituals, Achilles still rides the length of the wall, up and down, up and down, dragging the bloody mess behind.
